How we count.

  • Portugal's immigration law (Lei 23/2007, article 85) lets AIMA cancel a residence permit after long absences: 6 consecutive months or 8 months in total during a temporary permit's validity, and 24 consecutive months or 30 months within any 3 years for a permanent permit.
  • The law counts months. We count every month as 30 days, so the calculator warns you a few days early, never late.
  • The day you leave counts as a day abroad. The day you come back counts as a day in Portugal.
  • Reaching a limit already counts, so the most you can be away is one day less than the limit.

Before you rely on it.

  • Longer absences can be justified: ask AIMA before you leave or, in exceptional cases, after. Absences spent on professional, business, cultural or social activity do not cancel the permit if you can prove them.
  • Golden Visa (investment) holders have their own minimum stay rules. Check them with us.
  • EU, EEA and Swiss citizens register under different rules. This calculator is for residence permits.
  • Citizenship, tax residency and health cover can have their own day counts.
  • This is a planning aid, not legal advice. AIMA decides each case.

Questions about time outside Portugal.

How long can I leave Portugal with a temporary residence permit?

Up to 6 consecutive months, or 8 months in total spread over the permit's validity, before the permit can be cancelled. Longer absences need a reason AIMA accepts.

And with a permanent residence permit?

24 consecutive months, or 30 months in total within any period of 3 years.

What counts as a good reason to be away longer?

The law protects absences spent on professional, business, cultural or social activity, as long as you can prove them. For anything else, ask AIMA to accept the absence, ideally before you leave.

Does the count start again when I renew?

The law counts the 8 months over the permit's total validity, and practice around renewals varies. If you are close to a limit near a renewal, check your case with us.
