What is a NIF used for?
Almost everything official in Portugal - opening a bank account, renting or buying property, signing contracts, utilities, and your visa application.
Can I get a NIF without travelling?
Yes. We obtain it remotely on your behalf, including assigning a fiscal representative if you're a non-resident.
How long does it take?
It's usually one of the quickest steps. We confirm the current turnaround when we start your application.
Do I need a NIF to open a bank account?
Yes - a NIF is required before you can open a Portuguese bank account, so it's usually the very first step. We can handle both together.
Do non-residents need a fiscal representative?
If you live outside the EU/EEA, you generally need a fiscal representative in Portugal to receive tax-authority correspondence. We assign one as part of the service.
Is the NIF the same as a residency or social-security number?
No. The NIF is purely your tax number. A residence permit and the NISS (Social Security number) are separate - though many people need all three, and we can arrange each.
