FAQ

Common questions.

Does my income have to come from abroad?

Yes. The D8 is for income earned from foreign employers or clients. The 2026 guideline is roughly €3,680/month (4× the Portuguese minimum wage), and a savings buffer strengthens the case.

Employee or freelancer — which fits?

Both qualify. Employees show a remote employment contract; freelancers show client agreements. We help you assemble the right evidence either way.

How is the D8 different from the D7?

The D7 is for passive income (pensions, rentals, investments); the D8 is for active remote work income earned from abroad. We confirm the best fit on your call.

How much income do I need for the D8?

The 2026 guideline is around €3,680/month earned from outside Portugal (about 4× the Portuguese minimum wage), and a savings buffer strengthens your case. We confirm the exact figures on your call.

Can my family join me on the D8?

Yes. Your spouse or partner, dependent children and dependent parents can be included through family reunification.

Does the D8 lead to permanent residency and citizenship?

Yes. The D8 is a renewable residency route; after the legally required period of residence you can apply for permanent residency and, in time, Portuguese citizenship.

Do I need to speak Portuguese for the D8?

No Portuguese is required for the visa itself. A basic level (A2) only becomes relevant later, if you choose to apply for citizenship.
